GENERAL

Air Travel

China has the fastest expanding air travel market in the world with annual growth predicted at 8.8% and is expected to order 3,400 new planes in the next two decades (Executive Travel Magazine). It has three large airline groups that consist of Air China based in Beijing, China Eastern Airlines based in Shanghai, and China Southern Airlines based in Guangzhou.

There are also a number of smaller regional airlines that are quickly expanding such as Hainan and Shanghai airlines; known for their efficiency and service. As the government has deregulated and decentralized the market, a number of private and budget airlines such as Spring Airlines and East Star Airlines have entered the market in the last few years. These airlines offer no frills flights for as little as 99RMB or 13 dollars between a number of destinations. Passengers no longer have to pay any taxes at the airport as it is now included in the price of the ticket.

TICKETING AND PRICING

Tickets can be purchased directly at the airport, on websites such as Ctrip.com and Elong.com, or from a number of travel agents with many being available at large hotels. The Central Aviation Authority (CAAC) sets price ceilings for different routes and tickets are heavily discounted, up to 80% based on demand. Airport check-in and security procedures are typically quick and efficient.

SERVICE STANDARDS

Flight service in China tends to be superior to that of U.S. domestic flights. Complimentary newspapers, hot meals, and alcohol are served in almost all flights. Most Chinese airlines have high standards for flight attendants and their fleets are often much newer than those of airlines in the U.S.
