CANADA AND CHINA

Statistical data illustrates the improvement of china and Canada businessrelationship

According to parliament of Canada’s website, China is one of Canada’s largest and fastest growing trading partners in the world. Also, China was Canada’s largest export destination in Asia in 2009 and third largest in the world. Canadian exports of travelling services to china are expected to increase significantly in the near future because in 2009, Canada received approved destination status from Chinese government, making it easier for Canadian nationals to visit China and invest in China. The foreign direct investment (FDI) between Canada and China has grown significantly. In 2009 the direct investment from Canada to china was 3.3 billion. Since 2006, more that 30 ministerial level visits to china have taken place with a view to further reinforce the Canada and China relationship. The government of Canada recognizes the growing international importance of China and works to enhance Canada’s relations with this country of more than 1.3 billion people.

Based on the statistical data, the increasing exports and FDI from Canada to China, and the encouragement of doing business with China from Canadian government demonstrate that there must be a dramatic increase in the number of Canadian investors doing business in china. Therefore, Chinese cultural consultant would help Canadian investors avoid the so-called “cultural conflict” and “cultural-gap” when doing business in China, which will further close the relations—called “guanxi” between Chinese businessmen and Canadian investors such that the market share and profits of Canadian investors could be maximized.

The establishment of CCBC promotes China and Canada relationships

It is significant to do Chinese cultural consultant for Canadian investors as the establishment of Canada China Business Council — a private, non for profit organization shows the increasing business relationship between China and Canada such that more Canadian investors go to Chinese business market recently. Based on CCBC (2010)’s announcement, its target goals on their official website (CCBC) show that CCBC provides the Canada and China bilateral trade and investment facilitator, and provides sources to its members and offers unmatched business services and supporting-services for potential investors to China. CCBC forms as a membership-based association that is promoting the trade and investment within over 300 member companies between Canada and China. CCBC’s services and targeted goals help us to understand the merging economic development between Canada and China, which serves as a good example to illustrate how the Chinese and Canada business bilateral communication is becoming more frequently and tightly.

Due to such increasing bilateral business cooperation opportunities, knowing Chinese culture for those potential Canadian investors becomes a necessary “pre-course” before investing in China. As CCBC indicated above, there are a large increasing number of Canadian business firms doing business and investing in China. It is important for Canadian business firms to get business services and supports from CCBC, but understanding of the local culture could, to some extent, help Canadian investors broaden their Chinese investment market and ensure make a positive profits in China.

Our proposal introduces our topic by several aspects: the recent increasing export opportunities for Canadian exporting firms to enter into Chinese market; increasing bilateral investment opportunities between China and Canada; the recent establishment institutions that promote China and Canada’s business relationship—particularly, Canada China Business Council (CCBC); the historically statistical data that illustrates  the improvement of China and Canadian business relationship; the increasing bilateral political cooperation between China and Canada.

As we can see from Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper’s official website (2010), it is really important to learn about Chinese culture and habits before doing business with Chinese enterprises. The same thing will not happen if companies learn something about China before and they will not lose profit. They should learn what is the customer preferences of Chinese people and target on that. With doing so, their companies will make profits.

According to Ken Lewis (2008)– who is a senior trade Canadian commissioner in Beijing– argued on the Foreign Affair and International Trade Canada official website, he said that because of the richful resources and developed technology, Canada’s two-way trade with China is rising strongly. But since China is a huge and complex country, the culture diversity is a big concern for Canadian enterprises. With the help of a consultant company, they can better understand the various cultures existing in China’s long history and make better investment to help both the Chinese economy and Canadian’s.

According to CCBC, a private, non for profit organization, the number of Cnandian businessmen who are willing to invest in China is increasing. It is necessary for them to take courses to know about Chinese culture beforehand. It will help them broaden their knowledge and make specific investment in the aera they are interested in.

According to Embassy of the People of Republic of China in Canada (2005), Ambassador Shumin Lu emphasizes the close relationship between China and Canada. In the past years, the leaders of the two countries have visited each other for several times agreed to develop a strategic cooperation in various fields. Because of the close relationship between the goverments, the citizens get to know each other better and are more welcomed to build up their own relationship on trade and social aspects. With the help of a consultant company, people can understand their cultures through different ways– including traditional culture, business culture, etiquettes culture, agricultural and engineering culture, etc., which will help both sides to build up a better trading relationship.

With these points illustrated above, we can see that how vital a cultural consultant company is. China is a country whose history is long and has diverse cultures. If the Cnandian business people could take courses to learn Chinese cultures beforehand, they will have a better understanding of how Chinese people behave and what they like. In this way, they can make their investment more targeted and profitable, and they will be more enjoyable in China when they are doing busines..
